The International Travel Awards is one of the most prestigious recognitions in the international travel, tourism and hospitality industry, granted annually to the best from among thousands of players in the sector. The nomination of Városliget Zrt. focuses on the hard work, dedication and innovative approach consistently demonstrated in the implementation of the Liget Budapest Project. This year, our project, which is the largest cultural development in Europe, will compete in three international categories. In the next ten days, until 15 August, anyone can cast their vote for the Liget Budapest Project to bring home the winning trophy in the Tourism category.
The renewal of the City Park is currently Europe’s largest world-class cultural urban development project, and unprecedented in the country since the Millennium Celebrations of 1896. Thanks to the Liget Project, launched ten years ago, the construction of the House of Music Hungary, the Museum of Ethnography as well as the National Museum Conservation and Storage Centre was completed, while the Museum of Fine Arts and the House of the Hungarian Millennium were fully renovated.
Moreover, a quarter of a million square metres of green area have been restored, accommodating popular facilities such as the Main Playground, the two-kilometre-long illuminated running circle as well as sports fields used by local schools, and the Balloon lookout tower. The completed project elements have so far attracted more than eight million visitors. The developments in the City Park have significantly increased Budapest’s appeal as a tourism attraction.

The International Travel Awards is the most prestigious recognition of its kind, granted to businesses operating in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. The awards ceremony has been held annually since 2018 to identify and reward excellence in the field of tourism. Each year, nominations are submitted in numerous categories from all over the world for buildings, natural sights and special attractions, from among which the winner is chosen by public voting. Tourism professionals, the media and visitors from all over the world will again vote for the nominees this year. In 2024, the Liget Budapest Project will compete in three categories:
Best Family Destination
The City Park is genuinely family-centric: the Main Playground, the Sports Centre with a two-kilometre running circle as well as the Youth Sports Grounds and the extremely popular Adventure Park for Dogs have been constructed in recent years, while the Sensory Garden and the Mihály Mőcsényi Botanical Garden have been revamped. Nearly fifty special playground features have been installed in the 13,000-square-metre area of the unique Main Playground, the central attraction of which is a sixteen-meter-high climbing frame inspired by Pál Szinyei Merse’s painting Balloon. Families can also enjoy the interactive outdoor features of the Music Playground, established next to the House of Music Hungary. During the development projects implemented in the City Park, more than a quarter of a million square meters of green space have been rehabilitated so far, including the entire area of the historic Rondo. In 2024, the long-awaited renovation of the Children’s Traffic Park and its surroundings – traditionally among the Park’s most popular attractions – was also completed.
Best Tourism Development Project
The reconstruction of one of the oldest and most impressive listed buildings of the City Park, the former Olof Palme House, was also implemented within the framework of the Liget Budapest Project. It reopened as the House of the Hungarian Millennium and is now surrounded by a beautiful Rose Garden. The building, which is decorated with unique Zsolnay ceramics, provides the venue for the NEO Contemporary Art Space, with its mission being to exhibit works by the world’s foremost contemporary artists. One of the City Park’s contemporary architectural masterpieces is the House of Music Hungary, which has a unique appearance with its extensive glass walls and organically undulating canopy punctured with holes. Although opened only relatively recently, it has already become one of Hungary’s most visited cultural institutions and most accoladed buildings, having received international and domestic awards alike, while being a real social media star.
Best Tourism Attraction
Thanks to the Liget Budapest Project, ballooning – an attraction that enjoyed great popularity more than 120 years ago – returned to the City Park in 2022. The gas-filled BalloonFly, anchored to the ground, can rise to a height of 150 metres with fifteen passengers and a pilot on board, offering a stunning view. This development implemented in the City Park has significantly enhanced Budapest’s appeal as a tourism attraction. The Liget Budapest Project has already won over two dozen of the most prestigious international awards in the areas of urban development, architecture and property development. The accolades it has received so far for its architectural quality, tourism attraction and cultural palette have put our project among the best in the world.
The International Travel Awards celebrates excellence in the travel and tourism industry, recognising the dedication and commitment of industry leaders to deliver exceptional experiences to travellers.
