The City Park has been inspiring and welcoming sports enthusiasts from the outset. As it plays a very important recreational role for the residents in the surrounding districts, during the implementation of the Liget Budapest Project we made it our priority to strengthen and expand sports and outdoor playground functions that encourage a healthy lifestyle. A key project in this regard was the new Városliget Sports Centre, known as the SportLiget, which is now one of Budapest’s most versatile sports facilities. The sports centre, located in the south-eastern part of the City Park, at the intersection of Ajtósi Dürer and Dózsa György roads, is easily accessible, and provides opportunities for visitors – from the youngest to the elderly, from amateurs to professionals – looking for active recreation in a dozen sports. Athletes can pursue their passion in the most modern and safe conditions, with the added convenience of women’s, men’s and accessible changing rooms, as well as drinking fountains and bicycle storage facilities.
The Városliget Mini Arena is Budapest’s new and one of its most modern floodlit, artificial turf football pitches the size of a handball court. Its uniquely equipped with covered sub benches, a grandstand and a digital scoreboard.
The Basketball Mini Arena is set to become a favourite venue for amateur and professional basketball players with its rubber-paved and standard-size basketball court and 4.2-metre high protective net.
The Városliget Sports Centre is located on a huge area of more than three and a half hectares (35 thousand square metres), where visitors can try out over a dozen sports for free (with the exception of two rentable sports grounds) either individually or with friends.
The street workout contains a wide range of special machines suitable for professional street workout athletes as well as for beginner users thanks to providing exercises of varying degrees of difficulty. Integrated equipment, which can also be safely used by handicapped individuals, has also been installed.
When the question comes up about where to run in Budapest, many people think not only of Margaret Island but also of the circular running track in the City Park. There are plenty of things to see along the two-kilometre-long track winding through the trees with an ambiance of its own to inspire exercise, warm-up areas at its entry points, and drinking fountains next to it.
An Adventure Park has been built with exciting sections for riding scooters, roller-skating and cycling, which is expected to be a great favourite among older children and young people. The park awaits this generation with a skateboard track as well as a pump-track designed for riding scooters and BMX bikes. All the tracks have a dynamic design and smooth surfaces.
Please always wear your helmet or other safety equipment you have!
Teqball is a football-based sport, played on a specially-curved table (the Teq table), which is attracting a new generation of athletes and amateur enthusiasts (teqers), whose ambition is to develop their technical skills, concentration and stamina. The sport, which was created in Hungary in 2012 is a truly gender-equitable game, as the rules define that teqball shall be played between two (singles) or four players (doubles), irrespective of gender.
Wall climbing is becoming more and more popular in Budapest, which is why we have installed an outdoor climbing wall in the City Park. The climbing wall of the City Park Sports Centre is located on the existing hilly part of the area, where we have set up climbing sections with varying levels of inclination as well as with unique and organic shapes. The grips placed on the wall provide an ideal form of exercise primarily for older children. The lowest point of the approximately 120 grips is at 50 cm, and the highest is approximately at 210 cm. The climbing wall in the City Park designed for children is guaranteed to be a favourite.
Pétanque is a ball game of French origin that can be played in singles, doubles, or even triples. In pétanque the objective is to score points by having boules closer to the target than your opponent after all boules have been thrown. This is achieved by throwing or rolling boules closer to the small target ball, called a cochonnet, or by hitting the opponents' boules away from the target, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground.
The set of balls can be rented in the Pavilions next to the field.
The permanent orienteering course in the City Park was implemented through the cooperation of the Hungarian Orienteering Association and the Liget Budapest Project.
The course starts next to the Városliget Mini Arena (artificial turf football pitch).
