The statue of Archangel Gabriel in Heroes’ Square has been dismantled in order to carry out the most thorough restoration in its history. The almost five-metre-tall bronze sculpture was lifted off the 36-metre Corinthian supporting column for the first time after 120 years. After it is restored inside and out to its original state in the workshop by dozens of experts, the thus restored artwork is expected to be returned to Heroes’ Square in 2026.
During the renovation period, visitors don’t have to miss out on experiencing the artwork, as an impressive exhibition space has opened in the City Park Visitor Center, located in the building of the Museum of Ethnography. Here, a life-size replica of the statue of Archangel Gabriel has been installed. This allows visitors to get up close and personal with the artwork - which is otherwise only visible from a height of 36 meters -, and even take photos with it. The free exhibition is further enhanced by spectacular projections, offering visitors an extraordinary time-travel experience and a glimpse into a fascinating era of the capital’s history.
